Michiko Koshino - A Life of Street Fashion
Born into a family with generations of Japanese kimono makers, Michiko Koshino didn’t plan to become a fashion designer.Over 40 years ago, she left Japan for London - knowing very little English and having never attended fashion school. She made fast friends with a group of musicians, artists, and designers who would help define the style of the 1980s.
Launching her label Michiko London in 1986, Michiko’s bomber jackets and inflatables became icons of the 1980s London club scene. Since then, her work has been featured in numerous retrospectives of iconic 1980s fashion including a major exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.
Michiko is now in her 70s, and she continues to live in London and create fashion inspired by the street and club culture.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of her brand, Michiko London will have a popup shop at LaForet Harajuku from March 4 - 17, 2016. Michiko will be at the shop in person on most days - hoping to meet and talk to people who wear her fashion.
